The Unraveling:

The Counsel of Crows

The Woodland Realm is the futuristic setting of The Unraveling. A world where magic has replaced technology, and the  sudden absence of humans has allowed nature to reclaim the earth. Humankind’s once mighty concrete cities have crumbled, and animals have continued to evolve. Their new interspecies feudalistic society has shaped the ideology of many emerging animal tribes and townships. All creatures remain aware of the suffering, oppression, and slavery of their ancestors at the hands of the bipeds, and for some the draw to anti-biped fundamentalism seems necessary to prevent the mistakes of the past from reoccurring.

Sadly, many of the cruel practices of the bipeds continue under the realm’s tyrannical sorceress queen, Koshmara, and the general of the dreaded Storm-Cloud, Traeton. Together Koshmara and Traeton lead an army of like minded crows, grackles, boars, and rats that rule the land with an iron talon. Under Koshmara’s reign, the Storm-Cloud subverts the dream of peaceful interspecies democracy in favor of a new form of corrupted nationalism. The tyrants are tragically flawed and find themselves filling the power void left by the absent human influence. Both terrible and sublime, Koshmara and Traeton wrestle with their growing power and plot the next chapters of their dominance over the Woodland Realm.

However, all is not lost.

From the top of Hill’s Peak sits a lilting scarecrow, a relic from the reign of the bipeds, and home to one of the great ancient crows, and rivals to Koshmara’s rule, Sahir. Forced to live in hiding, Sahir (nicknamed Scarecrow) defends the oppressed creatures of the realm. During a thunderstorm, in the dead of night, a small black-capped chickadee named Twig narrowly escapes an attack by Koshmara’s Storm-Cloud, and the claw of destiny delivers him to the doorstep of Sahir’s home. Sahir takes Twig under his wing and discovers that the little bird may be an inflection point in the fight for the realm. Over time Twig becomes an apprentice to the wizard at Hill’s Peak and the two embark on a journey of personal growth and understanding.

But Sahir and Twig are not alone in their quest for realm-wide peace.

Among these allies is Bozwell the Bard, a kind hearted groundhog who wanders the Woodland Realm with his loyal sugar glider companions, Eca and Ayu. Together the trio sing songs and stage death-defying acrobatics for the kits, pups, and kids of the realm. One day, as fate would have it, the performers find themselves at the gates of Sky Village, on the eve of war. During their performance, the leaf and thatch dome of Sky Village’s theater is torn asunder as the terrible magic of Koshmara’s Storm Cloud’ rains down merciless devastation on the village.

In the wake of the destruction, the brave squirrel Captain of the Sky Guard, Evelyn, is convinced by the village council to mount an insurgency against Koshmara’s stronghold. Evelyn grudgingly assumes the role of a traveling performer as she, Bozwell, and the twins set out to save the queen of Sky Village from the clutches of Koshmara’s terrible rule. Along the eastward trek, they encounter dangerous new experiences and make some unexpected friends. Personal struggle, intrigue, espionage, and epic battles lie ahead as the band of freedom fighters struggle to survive in the dangerous world of the Woodland Realm.
